Minister González Laya receives Iranian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Javad Zarif, to hold political consultations between Spain and Iran

On Thursday, 13 May, the Iranian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Javad Zarif, held political consultations with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, Arancha González Laya.

At the meeting, they reviewed bilateral relations, including economic ties.

Minister González Laya stressed the importance of the talks being held in Vienna on the return of the United States to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) concluding successfully and called for Iran to make an effort to this end. Spain, like the EU, considers this agreement to be a key instrument in the non-proliferation architecture, and hence urged Iran to return to full and effective compliance with its obligations on nuclear matters.

The ministers held frank dialogue that addressed human rights and the regional situation. The minister expressed Spain's concerns over the threats to regional security and urged Iran to use its influence constructively to foster political solutions and hence regional stability.
