Administrator Samantha Power’s Meeting with Abraham Jiménez Enoa, Exiled Cuban Journalist

The below is attributable to Spokesperson Jessica Jennings:‎

Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with exiled-Cuban journalist Abraham Jiménez Enoa, an independent journalist and co-founder of the online magazine El Estornudo, along with representatives from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Abraham will be honored for courageous journalism at the CPJ's 32nd International Press Freedom Awards in New York on November 17.

During their meeting, Administrator Power congratulated Abraham for his courageous reporting, and heard from him the many challenges Cuban journalists - both in the country and in exile - face when attempting to cover human rights and basic news due to the Cuban Government's restrictive media environment. Abraham shared that government repression had caused many young journalists to flee the country in the past year, himself included, leaving little reporting capacity to provide the Cuban people or the outside world an accurate sense of events.

The Administrator emphasized the United States' continued support for media freedom, and reiterated USAID's commitment to journalists, independent media organizations, freelancers, and stringers around the world who are under attack simply for reporting the truth.
