The Minister of Environment and Climate Action, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, claimed that Mozambique should "think carefully" about an economic future based on fossil fuels.<_o3a_p>

The Minister also said that Mozambique "may be in a position that lends itself to careful reflection because a significant part of the investment made in its economic future based on coal and now more on gas" cannot prevail for much longer.<_o3a_p>

For João Pedro Matos Fernandes, gas will continue to be among the main types of fuel used for decades, but the future is now turned to renewables, given an increasingly ambitious environmental agenda to thwart global warming and the rise in sea levels and proliferation of extreme meteorological events.<_o3a_p>

The Minister further said that Mozambique "is entitled" to demand more from other countries, as it is among those most vulnerable to climate change, despite having almost insignificant pollution levels.<_o3a_p>

According to João Pedro Matos Fernandes, the country still has huge potential to produce using renewable energies, indicating capacity-building and training as essential.<_o3a_p>
