7 Tips (And a Bonus!) to Help Your Calm and Focus...

Taking charge of your mental health and learning to stay calm and focused throughout the day isn't always easy. And what works for you might be different from what works for someone else. Maybe it means learning how to be happy again or simply how to cope by destressing all through the day.

No matter your struggles, we have a few tips and tricks you can use to help you stay calm and focused on your mental health journey because better mental health is just around the corner.

  1. Take Charge of Your Day by Recharging at Night

First things first: without a good night's sleep, all your work on calm and focus are for nought. We talk about quality sleep a lot at cbdMD because without a positive baseline it will take you even more work than ever to stay calm and focused. Thankfully, a lot of the items on this list can also be used to calm and focus your mind enough to ensure a good night's rest.

Regular and consistent sleep helps to regulate your circadian rhythm, increase your concentration and memory retention, and keep your body healthy. A few things that can help you get better sleep include:

  • Establishing a realistic time to fall asleep and wake up each day (and sticking to it)
  • Keeping your bedroom at a comfortable temperature
  • Avoiding electronic screens at least an hour before you go to bed
  • Limiting the amount of caffeine you drink in the afternoon and evening
  • Aiming for between seven and nine hours of sleep each night
  1. Practice Mindfulness Throughout the Day

Mindfulness can be practiced at any time throughout the day and in any kind of space because all you need is yourself. It teaches you to focus your mind through controlled breathing exercises, meditation, body scans, and so much more. If your aim is to boost your calm and focus, the methods in the above link can easily become integral parts of your day as long as you consistently practice.

Breathing exercises allow you to focus on the present moment and the air entering and leaving your lungs, rather than the stress of your past or future. A body scan, on the other hand, may take a bit more concentration to experience the benefits. This involves taking time to sit still in a quiet environment and listen to what your body is telling you from the top of your head to the tips of your fingers and toes.

Many meditative practices include both breathing exercises and body scans along with many other calming and focusing activities.

  1. Don't Be Afraid to Take a Break When You Need It

You might be surprised to find that taking a break while working on a mentally demanding task can actually increase your productivity when you return to work. Especially after working on a project or other activity for a long period of time. Your brain can only handle so much input and constant stimulation.

So next time you feel frustrated and stuck on a certain task, take a break and go for a walk or switch to a different task before continuing to work on your original assignment. By taking a short break, you're actually allowing your mind to relax so that you can go back to the problem with renewed calm and focus.

  1. Develop a Naturally Calm and Focused Environment

Houseplants can do a lot more than just purify the air around you (although that's definitely important too). Studies have shown that having and interacting with indoor plants may reduce both mental and physical stress. There's a fair amount of credibility to the belief that connecting with nature can help you maintain your calm and focus.

Houseplants can help you sleep better, remove toxins from the air, and even increase your concentration and productivity. So yes, there is real research and evidence behind keeping a plant or two on your office desk and around your house.

  1. Exercise to Release Pent-Up Energy

Exercise isn't just good for your physical health - it can work wonders for your mental health as well. It allows you to release your stress while also energizing your body to face the day ahead of you. Exercising first thing in the morning before going into work or going about the rest of your day can give you a sense of accomplishment, setting yourself up for a great day.

Or you can exercise at the end of the day to release up any pent-up energy or stress your mind and body gathered throughout the day. No matter what you decide to do, any form of regular exercise will help to greatly increase your sense of calm and focus each day.

  1. Eat to Fuel Both Your Body and Your Brain

What you eat each day affects your health in many ways, but in this article, we're going to focus on how the fuel you consume can increase your mental health. Besides the fact that healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables contain fiber, antioxidants, and other goodies, a balanced diet is often correlated with better mental health.

Likewise, poor eating habits can erode your mental health, especially in combination with other bad habits like an inconsistent sleep schedule or an unhealthy workload. So keeping up a good workout schedule - or even a daily walk - can be key to keeping your calm and focus.

  1. Create the Mental and Physical Space You Need

There are many things you can do to make your living, working, or sleeping space work for you. Try listening to calming music, decluttering your space, setting a timer to take breaks, and switching tasks when you need to.

Being productive doesn't always look the same to everyone. Whereas one person may benefit from complete silence in their environment, another may get more work done with constant background noise or by constantly switching back and forth between subjects or projects. If you find you work best when completely absorbed in a task, try setting a timer so that you can focus on what you need to do without losing track of the rest of your day.

It may take a little trial and error, but once you understand what method(s) work best for you, you can create the mental and physical space around you that supports your calm and focus.

Bonus: cbdMD's Calm and Focus Capsules

You might have guessed it by now, but we have two new products to introduce to you: CBD Calm and Focus CBD Capsules. And they live up to their names. Made with the cannabinoids CBD and CBG (cannabigerol) in addition to a host of other beneficial ingredients, our new CBD capsules make the perfect addition to your mental health and wellness journey.

Whether used individually or combined, our CBD Calm and Focus capsules each contain natural formulas designed to help you improve your everyday focus and wind down at the end of the day. Although they contain the same cannabinoids, the other ingredients we've included are what help separate these two from the rest of our CBD products.

CBD Calm Capsules

Formulated with about 27 mg of CBD and 5 mg of CBG per serving, our CBD calm capsules are designed to help you relax whenever and wherever you need to. Our proprietary calming blend consists of saffron extract, green tea extract, L-Theanine, ashwagandha, and so much more.

SaffSerene™ Saffron Extract

The Crocus sativus (aka saffron) extract we use is SaffSerene - a mood-boosting and stress-relieving botanical extract made from the saffron plant. It made perfect sense to include 30 mg of SaffSerene in every serving of CBD Calm.

Green Tea Extract

Green tea is a common, often overlooked ingredient when it comes to maintaining healthy mental well-being. It contains caffeine and L-theanine, both of which can help improve your working memory and overall brain function. Especially L-theanine, an amino acid which studies show may support mental health and cognitive functioning.

Sensoril™ Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha has long been used around the world thanks to its stress-relieving properties. Sensoril is a carefully formulated ashwagandha extract shown to improve stress resistance as well as increase concentration and memory. Made from the roots of a shrub native to Africa, India, and the Middle East, ashwagandha is a must-have for anyone who's looking to add a little extra calm and focus into their life.

CBD Focus Capsules

With about 16 mg of CBD and 5 mg of CBG in every serving, the real stars of our CBD Focus Capsules are our proprietary ingredients, including Magtein, enXtra, Bacopa, and Huperzine (aka toothed clubmoss). All are included to help boost your energy and focus so you can complete the task ahead.

Magtein

Magtein is the first high-bioavailability magnesium supplement on the market today. Containing a mixture of magnesium, vitamin D3, and vitamin C, Magtein's high bioavailability allows it to better enter your bloodstream so you receive the most benefits possible. Those benefits include better short and long-term memory, a higher capacity for learning, and a reduction in stress, anxiety, and fear-based behavior.

enXtra

enXtra is a caffeine-free coffee alternative for sustainable energy. Alpinia galanga, the main ingredient in enXtra, provides up to five hours of energy without caffeine or the inevitable "crash" that usually comes after. Needless to say, it will help you get the job done while you're focused to do it.

Bacopa

Bacopa is a little-known herb that works by elevating your mood, reducing your cortisol levels, and increasing your learning and memory retention capabilities. And we've included a whopping 75 mg of it in every single serving of CBD Focus.

Toothed Clubmoss Extract

Last but certainly not least is Huperzia serrata, otherwise known as Chinese club moss or toothed clubmoss extract, and Huperzine A, a chemical derived from toothed clubmoss. Although research is limited and studies are still ongoing, preliminary evidence suggests that it could enhance (and protect) your memory and learning abilities as you age.
