Shorter transit time opens great opportunities for Greenland

Last year Eimskip opened a new office in Nuuk in Greenland right after the vessel sharing agreement with the Greenlandic transportation company Royal Arctic Line started. Since then Greenland has had connections to Eimskip's sailing system which opens great opportunities for Greenland. 'There are great opportunities related to Greenland´s connections to the international market and we are reaching out to our local customers in Greenland introducing these opportunities, our services, and the shorter transit time to them', says Kristine Lange Lyberth, manager for Eimskip Greenland.

One of the Greenlandic companies that have benefited from the shorter transit time is Arctic Star, a snowmobile distributor, specialized in Arctic Cat snowmobiles located in Sisimiut. Arctic Star trades directly with the Arctic Cat factory, located in Thief River Falls in Minnesota. From there the snowmobiles are transported to Portland and shipped by Eimskip to Sisimiut via Reykjavík. Just this year, Arctic Star has received 7 x 40´HC with 12 snowmobiles on each container.

Arctic Star has imported the snowmobiles since the company founded in 1988-89 and has been a customer at Eimskip since the route was direct via Montreal a few years ago. 'We have seen the recent benefit of shorter transit time with vessels to Greenland every week via Reykjavík, which we are very happy about. Before the transit time was in most cases two or three weeks', says Henrik Sasche, one of the owners of Arctic Star.
