Lloyd Prize honors innovative thinking, creativity

The Lloyd Prize for Innovative Thinking is an endowed award presented by the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies of Penn State College of Medicine.

The award's purpose is to encourage and recognize innovative thinking that yields research questions addressing important problems that face humankind.

Submissions are welcome from any student matriculated at the College of Medicine, any postgraduate trainee holding a graduate or professional degree (e.g., master's, doctorate) employed by the College of Medicine, or anyone with a faculty-level appointment at the College of Medicine.

The goal of the Lloyd Prize is to nurture a culture of reflective innovation and celebrate creative minds.

Application deadline is noon May 28, 2021. The recipient of the Lloyd Prize for 2021 will receive $1,000 and be recognized in early June.

Prospective awardees should prepare their application as a single PDF using the following format:

  • 8.5 by 11-inch pages
  • Half-inch margins
  • Arial typeface
  • Size 11 font minimum

The application should include:

  • Cover page: Include a descriptive title appropriate for lay audiences as well as applicant contact information including full name, phone number and @pennstatehealth.psu.edu email.
  • Background: Include one page or less that frames the problem being addressed by the nominated innovative thinker. The problem or question should be significant and the research question should have the potential to lead to impactful outcomes: microplastics in the food chain, shift to plant-based diets, social costs of assisted reproduction, antibiotic resistance, etc.
  • Innovative idea statement: Include one page or less describing the innovative idea and description of the research question, being sure to consider probable limitations and alternative hypotheses or interpretations.

References and figures are acceptable within the page limits.

Review and Award ProcessExpand answer

A selection committee representing diverse disciplines and other demographics will review the submissions and make a recommendation to the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.

The recipient of the Lloyd Prize for 2021 will receive $1,000 and be recognized in early June.
