Haila Named President of League Executive Board

Ames Mayor John A. Haila was recently elected president of the Executive Board of the Iowa League of Cities. Haila became League Board President during the League's Annual Business Meeting held recently in conjunction with theAnnual Conference and Exhibit in Waterloo.

Haila has served as mayor of Ames since 2017. In addition to serving as mayor, Haila serves as Governor Reynolds' mayoral appointee to the State of Iowa Justice Advisory Board. Prior to being elected, Haila served the Ames community as president of the Transit Agency Board of Trustees (CyRide) and Campustown Action Association, as well as on many local community organizations.

"In the coming year, Executive Board leadership will be prioritizing representing membership positions on upcoming Iowa 90th General Assembly anticipated legislation, helping cities better prepare to respond to local natural or humanly caused disasters and promoting civility within our communities," said Haila.

The League's Executive Board is responsible for adopting policies to provide direction to the League, adopting the annual operating budget, establishing membership fees, and providing direction to the organization. The Board consists of 14 board director positions and five officer positions: president, president‐elect and three past presidents. All of these positions must be filled by current city officials who represent cities of various populations and geographic locations.
