PHOENIX - Criminal investigators with the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) are investigating the death of inmate Richard O. Slaughter, 49, ADC #219254, as a suspected homicide.
Red Rock Correctional Center staff observed inmate Slaughter lying unconscious in his assigned housing location on June 2. After an assessment by medical staff and responding paramedics, inmate Slaughter was transported off-site to Maricopa Medical Center for treatment of visible head injuries from suspected blunt force trauma. He was later placed at Curahealth Hospital, where he died on June 16.
Inmate Slaughter returned to ADC custody in 2017 when he was sentenced out of Santa Cruz County to 2.5 years for unlawful distribution of images and resisting arrest. His assigned housing location was Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy.
All inmate deaths are investigated in consultation with the county medical examiner's office. The criminal investigation is ongoing, but the Department of Corrections intends to pursue prosecution to the fullest extent of any suspects identified in this case.
