Dollar General Contributes $50,000 to Oakville Schools
Surprise donation part of Company's ongoing focus on literacy
In keeping with the company's mission of Serving Others, Dollar General awarded $50,000 to Oakville Schools as part of the Company's Reading Revolution program today.
Representatives from Dollar General visited Oakville Schools in Oakville, Washington in hopes of inspiring a love of reading in students. Superintendent Rich Staley opened a decorated yellow and black box to find a $50,000 surprise inside. A surprise, that Dollar General hopes will help start a Reading Revolution within the district.
'Dollar General is proud to support our new neighbors in the Oakville community by investing in the local public schools,' said Denine Torr, Dollar General's vice president corporate social responsibility and philanthropy and executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. 'We hope these funds will help strengthen literacy programming and provide teachers and students with the resources and technology they need to excel.'
Dollar General opened its first store in Washington state in April 2020, increasing its national presence to 46 states. As a part of the company's on-going commitment to Serving Others, Reading Revolution funds are intended to be used to improve literacy and education goals through the purchase of books, technology programs, computers and/or other educational supplies or resources. Since its inception in 2013, Dollar General's Reading Revolution program has donated more than $3.9 million to schools.
