Softball Hits the Road for Rebel Classic

The Vikings opened their home slate with a pair of wins over Toledo Wednesday night. They look to build on that momentum this weekend at the UNLV Rebel Classic hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. Portland State opens the classic against a familiar 2018 foe in New Mexico State on Friday, March 9 at 9 a.m. PT. They will then take on the DePaul Blue Demons at 11:15 a.m. They take on host UNLV twice over the final two days of the tournament with a rematch against No. 1 Washington also on the docket. Portland State took its first two home games of the season in dramatic fashion, sweeping the Toledo Rockets Wednesday night at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex in Hillsboro, Ore. The Vikings trailed the entire game before tying game one with a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Toledo thought it had put the game away with a grand slam in the top of the eighth but the Vikings had other things in mind. Portland State plated seven runs, capped by a walk-off three-run home run, to take game one 11-8 in eight innings. Portland State took a three-run lead into the top of the seventh in game two. The Rockets plated two runs in the inning to cut the lead to one. With the bases loaded, induced a grounder to second for the third and final out to secure her second win on the day. Portland State hit .355 over the two games, led by Morrow and , who each went 5-for-8 on the day. Morrow drove in four runs, as did , who also hit her first career home run to lead off game two.

UP NEXT: The Vikings are back home next week for another midweek doubleheader against Bryant on Tuesday, March 13. They then head back to Seattle, Wash. for its final non-conference weekend. The Vikings will play Bryant two more times, along with Seattle U, three times at the Seattle University Invite.

WALK-OFF: gave the Vikings their first walk-off home run since 2016 and their first in extra-innings since Brittany Hendrickson in 2015.

CROOKED NUMBERS: The Vikings plated seven runs in the bottom of the eight, which is their most in a single inning this season. Their previous high was four runs in the first inning of their season-opening win over Sam Houston State. The last time Portland State scored seven runs in an inning was in the fourth inning of a 16-12 loss to CSUN in 2016.

GOING DEEP: After having the worst home run per game average in the nation a year ago, there has been an infusion of power this season. The Vikings have blasted 12 long balls, which is second in the Big Sky Conference. Six of the 12 homers have been hit by first-year players, led by 's team-best three homers. Freshman has blasted a pair home runs which has made her a mainstay in the Vikings lineup either behind the play or as the designated player.
