BSNC Director Louie Green, Jr. Receives FWS Alaska Native Leader/Elder Conservation Hero Award

BSNC congratulates BSNC Director Louis "Louie" Green Jr. of Nome on being awarded the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Regional Director's Alaska Native Leader/Elder Conservation Hero Award. Green has served on the FWS Seward Peninsula Subsistence Regional Advisory Council since 2010 and currently serves as Chair. Green holds extensive knowledge of the region's fish and wildlife resources, subsistence practices, customs and traditions as well as sport, commercial and other non-subsistence uses. The award was presented to Green by FWS Regional Director Greg Siekaniec.

Green has served on BSNC's Board of Directors since 2010 and the Sitnasuak Native Corporation Board for 19 years. He has also served on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Advisory Committee for 13 years. He is a subsistence hunter and fisherman, has commercial fished, worked on oil exploration drilling in the Norton Sound, Bering Strait and the Beaufort Sea, and worked on geothermal exploration at Pilgrim Hot Springs. He also worked as a licensed ship captain, airplane pilot, police officer and was employed as a trucking foreman and heavy equipment operator for Stampede Ventures, Inc. In 2000, Green was named by the Alaska Governor as "Citizen of the Year" for saving a life in the Nome jetty and his volunteer service in search and rescue efforts.

The members of the FWS Regional Advisory Council provide subsistence expertise to the process of forming regulations that govern the management of Federal public lands people use for subsistence purposes. The Council is a vital link between the Federal Subsistence Board and the rural residents whose lives the Board's decisions affect.
