Senator Elizabeth Warren: Thank you Chairman Durbin. I appreciate the opportunity to come before you to introduce Brian Murphy, a nominee to the District Court of Massachusetts. Senator Markey and I were proud to recommend Mr. Murphy to President Biden for his appointment to the federal bench.

Mr. Murphy started out as a public defender in Worcester, Massachusetts, and since then, has dedicated his career to representing individuals in state and federal criminal court. Initially, he was a solo practitioner in Worcester. Mr. Murphy is now the managing partner of a law firm of 12 attorneys.

Mr. Murphy's professional life has been defined by his dedication to the Constitution. His initial focus was on criminal defense at the trial and appellate level. Though his practice has broadened, he remains deeply committed to ensuring that every defendant has the right to a lawyer, regardless of income or status. He has shown this commitment through his criminal defense work in state and federal courts, and has also managed civil and probate matters.

His experience in court is impressive: He has tried more than 40 cases to verdict as sole counsel or chief counsel, more than half of which were jury trials. In addition, as managing partner, he is responsible for supervising and supporting attorneys at his firm as they develop their lawyering skills, as well as leading strategic business decisions.

Mr. Murphy is a staunch and committed advocate. He sees the humanity of the individuals he works with, and strives to make sure the interests of justice are served.

He serves and supports his community inside and outside of the courtroom.

He is fair and well-respected by prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other members of the Massachusetts legal community. They all speak of his outstanding preparation, his even temperament, and his professionalism.

I am proud to express my support for his nomination to serve as a federal judge on the District Court in Massachusetts, and I am happy to see he is joined here today by family and friends, including his wife Lynsey, their three children, his parents Margaret and Ed Murphy, his sister and niece, and his brother and sister-in-law. We have a large contingent here today, and I'm delighted to welcome them all.

I want to congratulate Mr. Murphy on this achievement, and thank the Committee again for the opportunity to introduce him this morning.
