Press Release

Following the release of President Biden's fiscal year 2022 discretionary funding request, House Appropriations Committee Subcommittee Chairs praised the request in statements. Excerpts of reactions from Cardinals with links to full statements are below.

Appropriations Committee Chair and Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Chair Rosa DeLauro

'President Biden's fiscal year 2022 discretionary funding request reverses decades of disinvestment by prioritizing initiatives that will help working families and the vulnerable. At a time when the coronavirus pandemic has exposed serious needs across the United States, this request meets the moment and charts a course for a better future.'

Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Chairman Sanford Bishop Jr.

'The coronavirus pandemic has laid bare many issues Americans are having and it is Congress' duty to respond. When we invest in America, we are setting Americans up for success.'

Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Chairman Matt Cartwright

'As chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce-Justice-Science, I'm pleased that President Biden prioritizes creating good jobs by revitalizing former energy communities and bolstering American manufacturing with $150 million for two new manufacturing innovation institutes, while making major investments in advancing America's global scientific leadership and building safer communities. As we look forward after a devastating year, now is the time to invest in a future where everyone has a fair chance to live a fulfilling life, and President Biden's funding request represents a vision for helping working people and families achieve their American Dream.'

Defense Subcommittee Chairwoman Betty McCollum

'The President understands that the health, economic, climate, and equity crises facing our country must be addressed with bold action. The proposed 1.5% increase for the Department of Defense will sustain readiness and modernization while we also focus on divesting from ineffective legacy programs and eliminating wasteful spending.'

Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Chairwoman Marcy Kaptur

'With increased investment in clean energy research, development, and implementation included in the President's budget request, we will create a new era of American economic growth and millions of jobs supporting our clean energy future, all while protecting our precious natural treasures and our planet for generations to come.'

Homeland Security Subcommittee Chairwoman Lucille Roybal-Allard

'The budget request for the Department of Homeland Security makes clear that investments by the Biden Administration will be better targeted toward actual threats to the American people and consistent with the nation's humanitarian values and legal obligations to migrants. At the same time, it is not clear that the proposal provides enough resources for the Department as a whole, including much needed support for recapitalizing Coast Guard assets or providing enough of an increase for cybersecurity to address the current risk environment. I look forward to seeing the details of the full budget request in the coming weeks.'

Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Chair Chellie Pingree

'President Biden's budget blueprint makes clear that the new government is committed to making long-overdue investments to preserve our planet and fight the climate crisis. After four years of budget proposals with massive funding cuts for the Environmental Protection Agency and other critical agencies, President Biden's proposed increases are a breath of fresh air.'

Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz

'I am pleased that it seriously confronts climate change, and prioritizes neglected problems like gun safety, civil rights and gender-based violence. Many priorities highlight my own as chair of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, namely his calls for increases in VA medical care funding, boosts in suicide prevention, and measures to aggressively address racial, gender and other historic disparities in health and environmental outcomes.'

State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee Chairwoman Barbara Lee

'President Biden's $63.5 billion budget request for foreign affairs will allow the United States to again be a strong and trusted partner for peace, progress, and security. This much-needed 12% increase to our diplomatic and development programs will help us deal with a global pandemic, unprecedent humanitarian crises, and devastating effects from climate change.

Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Chairman David E. Price

'This proposal would invest in desperately needed initiatives to help homeless families, veterans, and other populations in special need, and would expand rental housing assistance to an additional 200,000 Americans. With an eye toward future generations, the Biden administration includes robust investment in passenger rail, transit, safety initiatives, and promising clean energy technologies.'
