GMB CONGRATULATES NATIONAL GRID FOR REALISING WHAT WE'VE KNOWN FOR YEARS - BRITAIN NEEDS GAS
Now National Grid has woken up and smelt the coffee - maybe our Government will follow suit.
GMB has congratulated National Grid for slowly but surely realising what GMB has been saying for years - that Britain Needs Gas.
In a new report, entitled 'The Future of Gas: How gas can support a low carbon future', the grid says that it is not feasible to switch over to electric heating on the scale required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80 per cent of 1990 levels by the middle of this century.
This is entirely consistent with what GMB has been saying for years - gas heats 85% of UK homes and provides nearly half of our electricity so we need to make sure our supply is safe, secure, and in our own hands.
Stuart Fegan, GMB National Officer, said:
'It's very gratifying to see National Grid finally come round to what we've been saying for years.
'Gas heats 85% of UK homes and provides nearly half of our electricity and we need to make sure our supply is safe, secure, and in our own hands.
'In the real world gas is going to be needed to heat our homes for a long time to come whilst we transition to a low carbon economy.
'Now National Grid has woken up and smelt the coffee - maybe our Government might follow suit.
'I wrote to Claire Perry MP [Minister for Energy and Clean Growth] in the aftermath of the gas security alert issued by the Grid on Thursday 1st March calling for an urgent inquiry alongside other notable trade associations regarding our future security of gas and price volatility.
'I have yet to receive a reply.'
