Congresswoman Tenney’s Resolution Urging the European Union to Designate the IRGC as a Terrorist Organization Passes House of Representatives

Washington, DC-Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today announced that her resolution, H.Res. 288, the Encouraging the European Union (EU) to DESIGNATE Resolution, passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 411-14.

This legislation specifically urges the European Union to expeditiously designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization under the European Union's Common Position 931, and is supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA), United Against Nuclear Iran Action, FDD Action, and the American Jewish Committee (AJC).

Tenney has led the charge in working to convince our allies to join the United States in designating the IRGC as a terrorist entity. This resolution follows five letters sent by Tenney and dozens of her colleagues to the United Kingdom, EU, India, Australia, and Canada. On April 13th, Iran launched a large-scale attack against Israel, using approximately 170 drones, 120 ballistic missiles, and 30 cruise missiles from Iranian territory, as well as Iranian proxy terror groups in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Lebanon. This is the first time Iran has ever attacked Israel directly from its territory and demonstrates the heightened demand for the EU to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

"The world must signal to the Islamic Republic of Iran that they will face severe consequences for their widespread acts of terrorism," said Congresswoman Tenney. "In 2019, President Trump designated the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization, and sadly, our European allies refused to follow. This legislation implores our EU allies to finally designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, which would hold the IRGC accountable for their terrorism. With the passage of the Encouraging the EU to DESIGNATE Resolution, House Republicans reiterate our commitment to standing against the Iranian regime and dedication to eradicating the IRGC."
