Keep that New Year’s resolution for health and fitness alive!

The first step in the right direction to maintaining your health and wellbeing in 2017 is to check out the free or low-cost Healthy Sunshine Coast fitness classes for groups, seniors and mums with bubs.

There's outdoor yoga and yoga-lates - a mix of yoga and Pilates - exercise classes especially for mums, as well as tai chi, belly dancing and gentle exercise classes for seniors.

One of the key targets of council's Sunshine Coast Social Strategy 2015 was for the region to maintain its ranking as the healthiest in Queensland and the Healthy Sunshine Coast program is one way we can keep that status.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said taking part in regular physical activity was important for everyone's health.

'Unfortunately most Australians aren't getting the required recommended physical activity they need,' Cr McKay said.

'Since the launch of the Healthy Sunshine Coast program in 2016, we have received numerous testimonials and feedback from community members thanking council for providing an opportunity for them to get active and healthy,' Cr McKay said.

'I'm pleased to announce the Healthy Sunshine Coast program will return in 2017 and will again be delivered by accredited trainers in a range of locations across the Coast.'

Cr McKay said whether you enjoyed exercising in a picturesque beachside park or indoors at a training facility, Healthy Sunshine Coast offered something for everyone.

'Imagine the peace and serenity of joining an outdoor yoga class in the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Garden or trying yoga-lates, at the beautiful Shelley Beach Park every Saturday morning,' Cr McKay said.

'Following on from the success of the recent Healthy Sunshine Coast Mums program, $5 classes will be offered at Coolum, Creekwood and Maroochydore with low cost mums and bubs yoga continuing to be offered at Landsborough and Moffat Beach.

'The Healthy Sunshine Coast Mums program aims to cater for all fitness levels, conveniently allows mums to bring their children aged five and under along while they exercise in a welcoming and child-friendly environment.'

Seniors certainly don't miss out in 2017. Council is supporting seniors to stay healthy and active by providing $5 classes to the over-55s at Maroochydore, Maleny, Buderim, Golden Beach and Minyama. Resolve Fitness Club at Caloundra RSL in partnership with council are offering an additional free seniors fitness class so seniors can now enjoy two free sessions on the first and third Wednesday of the month.

Seniors can also participate in the low-cost Sunshine 60 and Better Tai Chi, Ageless Grace, Belly Dancing, Gentle Exercise and Fun and Laughter classes.

'So if you are keen to start getting active in but are not sure where to start, I'm sure Healthy Sunshine Coast will have a great option,' Cr McKay said.
