Join the international community to tackle global ocean and sea challenges

The Prime Minister affirmed the consistent policy of the Party and State of Viet Nam, ready to cooperate and join hands with the international community in solving global challenges in the seas and oceans, especially in environmental protection, rationally, efficiently and sustainably exploiting marine economic resources, contributing to better welfare of the people in association with the protection of regional and international peace and security.

Emphasizing that this is a global, all-people issue, which requires all nations, peoples, communities and people to properly perceive and act for the blue ocean, for safety, peace and development. Sustainable development, the Prime Minister suggested: All levels and sectors should urgently establish and implement regional and global cooperation mechanisms, share data, consolidate and perfect policies on the conservation of ecosystems, environmental protection and sustainable exploitation of marine resources in a substantive and effective manner, coupled with the protection and restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems.

The second issue is to ensure a peaceful, stable and secure environment at sea on the basis of compliance with international law, especially the Charter and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982), respecting sovereignty, interests and legal and legitimate economic activities of countries.

To settle disputes by peaceful means, in accordance with international law; respect for diplomatic and legal processes; ensuring freedom, safety and security of navigation and aviation at sea. Complying with regulations on fisheries cooperation mechanisms in the world to which coastal countries are members, the principles of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

According to the Prime Minister, as a country seriously affected by climate change and sea level rise, Viet Nam has been showing a strong determination to join hands with the international community towards a blue ocean and a green planet, peace, stability, cooperation and mutual prosperity, efforts to act, respect and abide by international law; actively participate in bilateral and multilateral mechanisms; actively promote regional and international cooperation activities on seas and oceans.

The Prime Minister affirmed that Viet Nam is committed to strictly implementing international obligations; cutting emissions, responding to climate change; ensuring maritime security and safety; settle disputes over seas and oceans through peaceful means, in accordance with international law and conventions. Resolutely and persistently protect the legitimate rights and interests of Viet Nam; protect the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Fatherland; at the same time respecting the legitimate rights and interests of other countries.

Viet Nam will step up the implementation of solutions for marine economic development on the basis of green growth, biodiversity conservation, and restoration of marine ecosystems, especially coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove forests, coastal protection forests based on advanced and modern technology and techniques. Handle well the sources of pollution to the sea and ocean environment, especially plastic waste as we have witnessed today.

The Prime Minister expressed his wish to continue to receive effective cooperation and support in the sea and ocean from international organizations and development partners in the world.
