COEHS faculty member wins bilingual educator award

The New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education(NMABE) has named College of Education and Human Sciences(COEHS) Associate Professor Carlos LópezLeivaas its University Bilingual Education Professor of the Year.

"Chair LópezLeiva is a wonderful colleague and leader of his program and department. I am not surprised by his receiving this honor as I know he has a strong vision for bilingual education for UNM and New Mexico. I'm glad that his work has been recognized by his academic peers," COEHS Dean Kristopher Goodrichsaid.

NMABE's University Bilingual Education Professor of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding university professor who works in a completely bilingual teacher training program. LópezLeivais one of two bilingual university educators NMABE recognized this year at the organization's 49th annual meeting.

LópezLeivachairs the Department of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies (LLS) and has taught LLS and Bilingual and TESOLcourses since 2011. LópezLeiva holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies with a focus on Bilingual Math Education and a Master of Education in Special Education with a Bilingual Education endorsement from the University of Chicago at Illinois. Additionally, he earned certifications in secondary and elementary education from Universidad Rafael Landívar and Colegio Evangélico in Guatemala.
