Dancer bill would allow active military members, families to keep out-of-state drivers’ licenses

TRENTON, N.J. - The Assembly Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee on Thursday released Assemblyman Ron Dancer's bill allowing military service members and their families to keep their out-of-state licenses while temporarily stationed in New Jersey.

Dancer's bill (A325) would exempt active military members and their immediate family from having to transfer their drivers'licenses within 60 days of moving to New Jersey. Other states, such as Connecticut, Florida, and Delaware, already have such exemptions.

"Service members and their families with permanent change of station orders are staying in New Jersey for a short time," Dancer (R-Ocean) said. "Knowing they are not staying here for more than several years, it makes sense to allow them to keep their drivers' licenses where they have a permanent residence."

The bill now goes to the Speaker for consideration by the full Assembly.
