Textile-based Regalia Conservation Workshop

News Release Date:
October 28, 2021

Sitka National Historical Park will host a conservation workshop on textile-based regalia Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 10:00 am until 2:30 pm. Registration is required as participation in this workshop is limited to ten people; please call 907-747-0110 to sign up.

Participants will share knowledge on caring for a Chilkat robe, Raven's Tail robe, button robe or other textile regalia at home. The park has invited Sarah Owens, an Alaska-based conservator with extensive experience in care and conservation of regalia to share ideas and answer questions.

There will be a presentation from Ms. Owens about textile conservation in a museum setting. Participants are invited to bring examples of Chilkat weaving and other textile regalia; to share their perspectives on proper care and treatment of different items, the special measures taken when handling and carrying regalia as they travel, and keeping them safe while storing and not in use.

To help keep our community healthy, safety measures are in place including limited participation, plenty of room for social distancing, and participants are required to wear masks.

Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and local public health authorities, we are increasing access and services in a phased approach across all units of the National Park System. Before visiting a park, please check the park website to determine its operating status. Updates about the overall NPS response to COVID-19 including safety information, are posted on www.nps.gov/coronavirus.
