New roadway network at New York-LGA opens six months ahead of schedule

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced Thursday the opening of LaGuardia Airport's new Terminal C outer roadway system, completed six months ahead of schedule and in time to improve traffic flow at the airport as travelers return to the skies this summer. The roadway opening is the latest milestone in the Delta hub's ongoing $8 billion transformation.

'Today's opening of this new airport roadway marks another key milestone in the construction of Delta's new home in Queens,' said Ryan Marzullo, Delta's Managing Director of New York Corporate Real Estate. 'Improving LaGuardia's roadway infrastructure is a critical component of the overall redevelopment project because we want to ensure our passengers have a seamless experience traveling to and from the airport. Thanks to the incredible men and women in the New York building trades for helping us to complete our roads nearly six months earlier than originally planned. We appreciate the PANYNJ's partnership in making the opening of today's new roadway a reality.'

In addition to the roadway system being completed ahead of schedule, construction on Delta's brand-new, state-of-the-art terminal continues to progress more quickly, so much that the new arrivals and departures hall, as well as the second concourse, will now open to customers next spring, followed by half of the third concourse next summer. This acceleration will now see the entire four-concourse terminal fully complete by the end of 2024, eighteen months earlier than initially planned.

'A completely redesigned road network -- with state-of-the-art traffic management systems and fewer signaled intersections -- will make it far easier for travelers arriving by vehicle to get to terminals or parking garages, representing a significant step forward as we create a world-class travel experience at a new LaGuardia Airport,' Governor Cuomo said.

The roadway system is opening just in time to help create a more seamless travel experience for Delta customers ahead of the busy summer travel season. Just a few weeks ago, service was reinstated to a number of key markets including Louisville, Ky., Milwaukee, Wis., Greensboro, N.C., Greenville, S.C., Omaha, Neb., and Birmingham, Ala. And beginning Aug. 5, new twice-daily flights will operate to Toronto, Canada, with plans to boost to six times per day this fall as travel restrictions lift and transborder demand returns.
