It was a historical week for student-athletes at Vanderbilt University.
On Saturday, Sarah Fuller became the first female to get into a Power 5 conference football game.Wearing No. 32, the same number that she sports as a goalkeeper for the women's soccer team, the senior suited up in full pads on the gridiron for the SEC tilt at the University of Missouri. In her onlyappearance in the game, she opened the second half with a squib kick to the Tigers' 35-yard line. It wasn't returned. Mizzou went on to win, 41-0. The Commodores reached only as far as Missouri's 32-yard line in the game, so Fuller didn't have an opportunity to attempt a field goal.
Earlier in the week, golfer John Augenstein announced that he was turning professional. Two weeks ago,the decorated fifth-year senior at Vanderbilt finished T55 at the Masters into which he gained entry as the runner-up of the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship. He leaves behind his amateur career having risen to a personal-best No. 4 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking in his final placement.
Augenstein joins the play-for-pay ranks just after the only other amateur who made the cut at Augusta National did the same. Not long after accepting the Silver Cup as the low amateur (T34) at the Masters, Andy Ogletree, a fifth-year senior at Georgia Tech and 2019 U.S. Amateur champ, turned pro. So, both former collegiate standouts will enter 2021 hopeful of receiving sponsor exemptions to begin building a foundation of non-member FedExCup points.
As it concerns established professionals, only Will Zalatoris is scheduled to compete at this week's Mayakoba Golf Classic presented by UNIFIN. He qualified for Special Temporary Membership with a T16 at the Bermuda Championship, so he is allowed unlimited starts and unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of this season. At the conclusion of the tournament at El Camaleón, he will be added to the Beyond 150 Reshuffle category for its first reorder of 2020-21.
