Meeks Issues Statement on Admin Placing Human Rights Conditions on Part of Egypt’s Security Aid

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Biden administration's decision to withhold some security aid to Egypt until human rights conditions are met:

'I support the Biden administration's decision to withhold a portion of security assistance to Egypt contingent on measurable progress on important bipartisan human rights criteria, including dropping politicized and unfounded prosecutions against NGOs and peaceful civil society activists. This decision is consistent with the law and our values as a country. Last month, I urged the State Department to do so in order to uphold the administration's stated commitment to ensuring human rights are an integral component in our foreign policy. I will continue to closely monitor the situation in Egypt and continue engaging with the administration and NGOs advocating for basic rights and freedoms.'
