ALERT: Water Service Disruption Planned Near Broad/Meinecke Tomorrow

Water service will be temporarily disrupted for customers in the area around Broad Street and Meinecke Avenue on Friday, July 22, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., due to the current sewer replacement project that is under construction in the North Chorro neighborhood.

Water Disruption to Affect Customers Around Broad Street and Meinecke Avenue

Why is the shutdown needed?

The City of San Luis Obispo started construction on the sewer replacement project in the North Chorro neighborhood on July 7 to replace the aging sewer infrastructure. This temporary disruption of service is needed to make improvements to the project site, so that the construction team can work safely in underground trenches to replace the sewer pipeline. Part of the safety improvements include construction of a "highline", a temporary water line that is located away from the trench that will provide water service to the customers in this area. Once the "highline" is constructed, water service will resume to customers and the "highline" will remain in place until the sewer project is complete in this area in Fall 2022.

Who's affected?

A total of 24 service connections and two fire hydrants in the Broad Street and Meinecke Avenue area will be without water during this time. All impacted businesses and residents will be contacted prior to the shutdown. A more detailed map of the properties impacted is listed below.

About the Project

The sewer replacement project will continue through the summer and is expected to be completed in fall of 2022. The completion of the project will provide several benefits to our community including:

  • Reduced need for emergency repairs
  • Reduced need for preventative maintenance
  • Ensure uninterrupted wastewater flow without health or environmental hazard from wastewater leakage
  • Improve operational efficiencies by reducing inflow and infiltration.

What to Expect During Construction

Access to residences and businesses will be maintained. However, the following impacts may occur:

  • Temporary lane reductions, detours and road closures
  • Traffic delays
  • Noise
  • Dust
  • Heavy equipment
