Wales creates new Ministry for Climate Change

The main headline from a planning and property perspective is the creation of a Ministry for Climate Change which will be led by Julie James (who was previously in charge of housing and local government). Lee Waters will be deputy minister.

There has been a change in the Economy team too, with Vaughan Gething taking over from Ken Skates.

The Climate Change Ministry combines the environment, energy, housing, planning and transport portfolios and Savills sees this as a major step forward.

Chris Potts, the Head of Savills' Cardiff Office said: 'The new Ministry is an important signal of intent from the new Welsh Government and reflects the work that has been done by a range of organisations. This stresses the need for urgent and coordinated action to tackle climate change and the commitment to placing the environment at the heart of the new Government's decision making is a significant, necessary and welcome response'.

Savills has its own team dedicated to climate change. Savills Earth brings together the expertise of more than 80 specialists to advise developers, occupiers and investors in the public and private sectors on their sustainability, energy and carbon strategies.
