American Rescue Plan Delivers New Affordable Housing Opportunities for Hoosiers in Charlestown

New Albany News and Tribune: Charlestown using READI grant for affordable housing

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today celebrated the brighter future the American Rescue Plan is STILL creating for Clark County. Thanks to the state's READI program - which is fully-funded by the Rescue Plan - the City of Charlestown will build about 170 affordable housing units in the community. This $2.4 million investment will deliver a brighter future for Hoosier families, and it was Indiana Democrats who got it done.

In contrast, the Indiana Republican Party - including U.S. Senator Todd Young - said "NO" to this brighter future. Indiana GOP Chairman Kyle Hupfer called this project "socialism " - claiming the Republicans' opposition was a "great campaign to run on". The Indiana GOP's opposition to the kitchen-table issues is another reminder they have no plan for Indiana's future - just abiding by an extremist agenda.

Here's a look at how the American Rescue Plan continues to deliver for Hoosiers in Clark County:

New Albany News and Tribune: Charlestown using READI grant for affordable housing

As Charlestown expands with the development of the River Ridge Commerce Center, there's need for more housing opportunities in the city.

The Marian Group has received a grant through the Indiana Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative, or READI, program for $2.4 million to build new apartments for the city, with over 170 units planned.

Building will take place in April 2023 and is scheduled to take one year to complete construction. The apartments will be located along Market Street.

"Charlestown has a great need of a variety of housing with the growth coming into our section of River Ridge," Charlestown Mayor Treva Hodges said. "Market indicators suggest that apartments are in high demand." […]

The apartments will be based off of 60% of the average median income of Charlestown. They are designed to help people with lower income and for those who are new to the city. […]

Apartments can also spur other developments by bringing more population. Growth of a community can bring new restaurants, stores and more.

"People are worried because we have lots of housing growth right now," Jackson said. "We can keep our small-town feel and hometown feel, I think growth will only help Charlestown."
