Over $1.1 Million in grants awarded to Alabama arts organizations

Announcing project grant recipients, Folk Arts apprentices, and a new Council memberMONTGOMERY, Ala., (December 3, 2021) - At its December quarterly meeting in Montgomery, Ala., the Alabama State Council on the Arts awarded 182grantstotaling $1,161,580 to 148 organizationsand individualsacross the state. Organizations providing public programs in arts education, folk arts, community arts, literary arts, dance, music, theatre, and visual art forms received support through this competitive process. Some of these grants will support new and innovative public offerings and educational programs, while others will emphasize artistic traditions through the implementation of festivals, concerts, exhibitions, artist residencies, and workshops.

"The Council is pleased to support educational groups, community organizations, and arts institutions with these grants," said Council Chair Jim Harrison III (Tuscaloosa). "Funds awarded through our granting process strengthen cultural expression, enhance our vibrant state's creative economy, and improve the quality of life for all Alabamians."

Additionally, 15 individuals were awarded Folk Arts Apprenticeships. The program is designed to preserve and pass on Alabama's traditional arts. The grants are presented to artists looking to teach their skills to students or apprentices who want to apply to work with a particular folk artist. These awards have consistently had a tremendous impact, not only by continuing important cultural expressions within communities but also by providing valuable artistic training for individuals and contributing to Alabama's creative economy. Among the grant recipients this year are artists working in craft traditions including quilting, white oak basketry, pine needle basketry, piñata making, chair caning, and pottery, and also performance traditions such as Old-time fiddling, Yoruba drumming, and Vietnamese Lion Dance.

For many years, recipients of the Folk Arts Apprenticeships have showcased our state's vibrant and diverse cultural traditions. Through this program, the Council recognizes the value of traditional arts apprenticeship training and helps preserve and pass on the living traditions that make Alabama unique.

"The Council is steadfast in promoting arts organizations at the forefront of creative thinking and innovation, as well as the traditional cultural arts that are an important part of our shared history," said Dr. Elliot Knight, the Council's executive director.

The next grant application deadline is March 1, 2022, for individual artist fellowships and grants for planning, design, and construction of cultural facilities. The application portal will open on January 1, 2022. The next deadline for organizations to apply for funding for projects will be June 1, 2022, and the application portal will open on April 1, 2022.

Governor Ivey appoints new Council member
During the December meeting, the Council also acknowledged Mary Wadsworth White (Florence). After six years of service to the Council on the Arts, Mrs. White chose not to seek reappointment when her term concludes at the end of 2021. The Council thanked her for her service and recognized her many contributions as an arts advocate.

"I have loved learning about all the programs and projects the Council has supported through the years and being a small part of the future of the arts here," said Mrs. White.

Governor Kay Ivey recently appointed Dr. Ramona Hyman (Harvest) to the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Beginning January 1, 2022, Dr. Hyman will serve a six-year term on the agency's governing board. In addition to the new appointment, four current Council members were confirmed for six more years of service. The terms for Julie Friedman (Fairhope), Kim Vice Mitchell (Decatur), Dr. Henry Panion III (Birmingham), and Ceil Jenkins Snow (Birmingham) run through 2027. Also noteworthy is the selection of Council officers for 2022 - Dr. Panion as chair, Mrs. Weil as vice-chair, and Ms. Snow as secretary. They will serve in these roles through 2023.

The grants below are in response to applications submitted under a September 1, 2021 deadline and will support projects and programming between January 1, 2022, and September 30, 2022.
