Getty Images Awards $45,000 in Support of Independent Photojournalism

Winners include freelance photojournalists and organizations facilitating documentary photography
New York - September 9, 2021: Getty Images, a world leader in visual communications, has today announced the recipients of its Editorial Grants, awarding $45,000 collectively to both individual photojournalists and organizations which support documentary photographers.
'For over 15 years, Getty Images has supported independent photojournalists globally through our Editorial Grants program, and we are honored to enable the production of ground-breaking work yet again, especially during a time when global uncertainties continue to impact daily lives around the world,' said Ken Mainardis, Global Head of Content, Getty Images. 'This year, we are thrilled to expand our reach to global photography organizations who are committed to the growth and development of emerging talent within the industry and who understand the importance of visual storytelling of underrepresented communities and significant social issues at every level.'
The Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography awards three grants of $5,000 each to freelance photographers and videographers reporting stories of community resilience in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 recipients are:
-Hailey Sadler for We Hold One Another Together, examining the deployment of tiny homes across the Navajo Nation to help multigenerational families contain COVID-19, as well as provide a longer-term solution to protect indigenous elders' health. Hailey is reporting this story as part of the Home Collective, a documentary storytelling initiative with video journalist Darian Woehr.
-Javier Fergo for With No Food, a Home or Work: Migrants on the Edge in Andalusia during the Pandemic, a photo series documenting the living and working conditions of migrant agricultural workers in Almería and Huelva during the COVID-19 crisis.
-Raphael Alves for Insulae, which shows the isolating effects of the pandemic on the indigenous communities in and around Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, an area that already grapples with geographic isolation and the threat of flooding.
The judging panel also extended an honorable mention to Matteo Bastianelli for his project, Blooming Flowers, about migrants in Italy who work in the country's agricultural sector.
Grant recipients were selected from a global pool of nearly 200 entrants and judged by an esteemed panel which included:
-Pete Souza, former Chief Official White House Photographer
-Jessica Lim, Director of Angkor Photo Festival
-Katherine Pomerantz, Director of Photography, TIME Magazine
-Walter Astrada, Photographer
The Getty Images Editorial Grant for Photography Program provides two $15,000 grants to organizations that support documentary photography and its practitioners, either through public engagement or professional development.
-Fabiola Ferrero + OjoRojo for Semillero Migrante, a photography mentorship program focused on migration stories shared between Colombia and Venezuela. The program aims to support photographers from within the affected communities, and not only inspires debate around migration, but also as a learning and integration space for aspirant documentary photographers.
-The Nlele Institute (TNI) for Bridging Gaps Through Informal Art Education in Photography, an extensive program providing photography workshops, exhibitions and mentorships to artists and participants across Nigeria since 2013. Over the years, TNI has built substantive curriculum, with credible faculty and partners and its impactful work benefits a robust community of emerging photographers with viable paths into the profession.
The photography programs were chosen by an internal jury from Getty Images global Editorial team which included:

-Fernando de Dios, Editorial Manager, LATAM
-Jay Davies, Director of News Photography, EMEA
