With Patient Needs Top of Mind, Healthcare Turns to Hybrid

It's safe to say that few industries have been as positively impacted by technology as healthcare. Over the past decade, we've witnessed the rise of patient-centric tools that streamline the process of receiving healthcare, making it more efficient than ever. From advanced AI personalization engines that generate critical insights for patients, to sensors in smartwatches that report on an individual's blood pressure and heart rate, healthcare innovations of the future are powered by technology. Hybrid multicloud technology, in particular, has simplified the storage, sharing, and access of patient information.

To learn more about the impact of the cloud Nutanix commissioned a survey with Vanson Bourne to create the sixth annual Enterprise Cloud Index. The company also looked specifically at findings among healthcare organizations, seeking to answer: How are healthcare organizations implementing and using cloud and hybrid multicloud with legacy infrastructure? What are some of the biggest pain points healthcare IT pros in the industry face in adopting it? Which infrastructure model is best suited to patient and clinician needs?

What the survey found: 73% of healthcare IT professionals currently use multiple IT environments across their organizations to meet increasing patient needs. Further, healthcare ambitions for increasing mixed-IT usage in the next one to three years are also significantly greater with 89% of healthcare IT professionals reporting planned mixed IT environments in the next 1-3 years.

And when it came to selecting a cloud, healthcare's anticipated leap to 61% hybrid multicloud usage penetration by 2027 outpaces plans among global cross-industry respondents, who expect 35% usage in the same time frame, up from 15% today. It's clear that healthcare is gaining traction with hybrid multicloud. In fact, healthcare's current adoption of this model has grown by 10 percentage points, from 6% in 2023 to 16% in 2024.

And the reasons for healthcare organizations' adoption of hybrid multicloud quickly became clear: to improve security posture and/or meet regulatory requirements (48%), more so than any other industry we surveyed in our Enterprise Cloud Index report. Healthcare organizations house patients' protected health information (PHI), and understand that hybrid multicloud is the ideal solution for protecting it.

Hybrid multicloud enables IT teams to secure patient data, ensure regulatory compliance and enable healthcare providers to deliver advanced and technology-driven care - extending the patient experience to the digital space. While healthcare has made strides in embracing technology to secure, organize, and protect patient data, there is still untapped potential in harnessing the power of the cloud.
