Recreation Department launches Teen Communications Program

Do you have a teen interested in video production? News? Being a content creator?

There's a new,free recreation program aimed at teaching young people the basics, while helping them get a jumpstart on their college and career goals! The Teen Communications Program is based out of the Frank Johnson Recreation Center (2227 Mercer University Drive),and is accepting new students now.

It's open to young people from 6th to 12th grades, and no equipment or experience is needed to sign up. The program meets in a combination of in-person and online classes. Students will learn how to shoot and edit video, about the aesthetic elements of content creation, how to create content for different platforms, how to write scripts, about different layouts and planning, and more. They'll also learn about the gear involved in content creation, from cameras and microphones to software used for editing. Students have already had experience shooting, editing, and covering Southwest High School's basketball games.

"We want to teach the younger generations about the newest technology, and how to use it beyond just social media," says Ja'Cory Bazell, Program Coordinator. "We're not just teaching them cool tech stuff; we're also helping them learn professionalism with something they can put on their resume before they've even gotten a job."

"This program was started as a platform of professional training in content production for middle and high school students," says Center Supervisor Clarence Thomas. "Through hands-on learning opportunities beginning with video production, we are working toward getting students ready for college, internships, or work as video professionals in journalism, film, marketing, and other related fields."
