Freight transport volume on the river Danube decreased by 3.1% in 2020

Vienna,2021-03-30 - According to Statistics Austria, a total of 8.2 million tonnes (t) of goods was transported on the Austrian section of the Danube in 2020. This represents a decrease of 3.1% or 0.3 million tonnes compared to 2019 and is the second lowest transport volumesince 1995.

The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance travelled) was 7.5 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm) and therefore by 0.9 billion tkm (-10.2%) lower than in 2019. At 8 071, the number of transportations almost reached the level of the previous year (-0.3% resp. -23).

For international goods receipta decrease by 4.9% to 4.0 million t was reported and the international goods dispatch was reduced by 8.8% to 2.1 million t. Transitthrough Austria declined by 11.3% to 1.6 million t. For inland transporta growth of 134.5% to 0.6 million t was reported in the reference year.
