Religious affiliation 2021: three quarters profess a religion

Vienna,2022-05-25 - 6.9 million people in Austria - that is 77.6 % of the population - profess a religion, around 2.0 million (22.4 %) do not feel they belong to any religious community. These are the key findings of a voluntary survey on religious affiliation conducted by Statistics Austria on behalf of the Federal Chancellery in 2021.

"More than three quarters of the population in Austria profess a religious denomination, while just over one fifth do not belong to any denomination. This means that the proportion of the population with no religious affiliation has increased by 18.6 percentage points over the past 60 years. The proportion of people of Roman Catholic and Protestant faith has fallen by 36.2 percentage points over the same period, from 95.2 to 59 %. The drivers are not only the strong increase in secularization but also a trend toward more religious diversity," explains Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.
