ACC Animal Services, Leisure Services, Solid Waste, Transit & Other Schedule Changes for MLK Holiday

MLK Day of Service

Residents are invited to honor Dr. King's legacy at the 2020 Athens-Clarke County Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 20. This year's kick-off celebration will take place from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Clarke Central High School gymnasium located at 350 South Milledge Avenue.

Individuals can volunteer at 20 sites throughout the community from 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. including Dudley Park, Trail Creek Park, and other locations. For more information or to register online, visit www.accgov.com/mlkday.

Animal Services

  • Animal Shelter
    • Closed Mon., Jan. 20, resuming regular hours on Tues., Jan. 21.
  • Field Services
    • Emergency on-call only will be provided as normal.
    • Emergency services - such as an animal bite, a seriously sick or injured animal, or an animal trapped inside a living space of a home - will be provided by calling 911.

Leisure Services

  • Facilities
    • Closed Mon., Jan. 20. All facilities will reopen on Tues., Jan. 21 under regular hours of operation.
  • Parks
    • Reduced hours of 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Mon., Jan. 20. Parks will reopen on Tues., Jan. 21 under regular hours of operation.

Solid Waste

  • Residential and commercial (outside the Downtown district) garbage and recycling collected by the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department will not be collected on Mon., Jan. 20. Garbage and recycling will be collected on the following schedule:
    • Regular Monday collections will be collected on Tues., Jan. 21.
    • Regular Tuesday collections will be collected on Wed., Jan. 22.
    • Regular Wednesday collections will be collected on Thurs., Jan. 23.
    • Regular Thursday collections will be collected on Fri., Jan. 24.
    • Regular Friday collections will be collected on Sat., Jan. 25.
  • Residential and commercial (inside the Downtown district) garbage and recycling service will be collected as regularly scheduled.
  • Leaf & limb collection will not collect on Mon. Jan., 20. Leaf and limb crews will resume collection Tues. Jan. 21 and will continue through Sat., Jan. 25 in Area C.
  • The recycling center will be open on Mon., Jan. 20 under regular hours of operation from 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • The landfill will be closed on Mon., Jan. 20, resuming regular hours on Tues., Jan. 21.
  • Solid Waste offices will be closed on Mon., Jan. 20, resuming regular hours on Tues., Jan. 21.
  • The CHaRM (Center for Hard to Recycle Materials) site will be closed on Mon., Jan. 20, and Tues. Jan. 21, resuming regular hours on Wed., Jan. 22.

Transit

  • Athens Transit will be closed on Mon., Jan. 20. Normal weekday operations resume on Tues., Jan. 21.
