Prime Minister’s meeting with Grand Chancellor of the Order of Malta

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė met with Grand Chancellor of the Order of Malta Albrecht Freiherr von Boeselager to discuss the bilateral relations and the activities of the Order in Lithuania.

This year is marked by the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the Order of Malta and Lithuania. The fact that the Order started its support immediately after Lithuania's gained independence was greatly appreciated by both the state and the people.

'The Order of Malta has developed an impressive charitable activity in Lithuania. The cross of the Order of Malta has become a universally recognisable sign. We are grateful for your efforts in contributing to reduced social exclusion, particularly in the hard times of the pandemic. I am happy that Lithuania is now itself a benefactor rather than a beneficiary in the international community', said Ingrida Šimonytė.

The meeting also covered irregular migration across the Lithuania-Belarus border and the activities of the Order of Malta in this regard.

The Prime Minister thanked the Order of Malta and to its local relief organisation in particular for their cooperation in integrating migrants. Lithuania needs such international experience.
