IHS Brazil and Vivo Partner to Offer Connectivity on São Paulo Metro

April 15, 2024, São Paulo: IHS Brazil, part of the IHS Holding Limited (NYSE: IHS) ("IHS Towers") group, one of the largest independent owners, operators, and developers of shared communications infrastructure in the world by tower count, has today announced a new 5G indoor mobile phone coverage system, using Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) infrastructure, for São Paulo Metro Line 5, managed by ViaMobilidade.

The first installation has begun at Campo Belo station, and will be replicated across all remaining stations over an approximate 12-18 month period. The solution, which uses a digital active system and 5G active antennas, is believed to be one of the most modern DAS projects in Latin America, and is expected to serve around 630,000 people daily. The DAS infrastructure is owned by IHS Brazil, who are also responsible for its operation, maintenance, and monitoring through their network operating center.

Cassio Futuro, Commercial and Operations Director, IHS Brazil, said "São Paulo Metro Line 5 has 17 stations, 12 of which are underground, and 12km of underground tunnels where mobile signal cannot reach without a dedicated antenna system. With our expertise in indoor coverage systems, we are helping enable mobile connectivity across the entire length of Line 5. We are implementing a state-of-the-art system using 5G and 4G technology, so that mobile network operators are able to provide their service to end users throughout this transport system."

Elmo Rocha, Director of Network Planning, Vivo, commented "Vivo, the first mobile network operator to join this project, will provide 5G and 4G coverage across the entire route using the DAS infrastructure built and installed by IHS Brazil. This project is yet another example of Vivo's commitment to offering the best connectivity to our mobile network customers, even if they are in challenging coverage environments, such as tunnels and subway stations."

Antonio Marcio, ViaMobilidade Director, said "The need for connection in the internal facilities of Line 5 prompted ViaMobilidade to explore a communications infrastructure solution capable of meeting the growing demands of metro users. IHS Brazil's expertise in DAS, and Vivo's strong network coverage, were fundamental to providing connectivity across this metro line."

Johnny Brito, CEO Brasil, Comba, the telecommunications engineering company assisting the project's implementation, commented "Through Comba's expertise and track record of developing highly complex projects, we have been able to provide the latest technical solutions for our partner, IHS Brazil, helping ensure a continuous, high-quality experience for users across Line 5."
