Showcasing worldwide use of composites in infrastructure
In recent years, many articles and books have been published on the need to upgrade infrastructure in Europe and the United States. This trend is a real chance for industrial players specializing in composites. Some countries have already jumped on the bandwagon, like China, which is now the world's biggest market in composites.
Related to climate instability and/or topography, the challenges linked to infrastructure and the use of composites can be wide-ranging. Indeed, most infrastructure is either outdoors, underground or in contact with water. Given these issues, composites are an apt alternative because of their resistance to corrosive environments, their lifespan and their limited requirements in terms of maintenance. Moreover, thanks to the lightness of composites, on-site construction can be avoided. This can save time and ensure a high level of quality.
The book The Future of Infrastructure presents eighty-one case studies from around the world in transportation, utilities, civil protection and open-air public infrastructure. These case studies perfectly illustrate the various uses of composites in civil engineering and public works in different countries and regions.
Through all these examples, The Future of Infrastructure gives readers the broadest possible understanding of the advantages of composites in the construction and renovation of infrastructure. In this sector, highly stringent rules have to be respected, especially in the design and building of structures like highways, bridges and tunnels.
'We decided to present our different case studies according to the duration of their commercialization and the extent of their development. In this publication, we've included examples that show how composites are used in cutting-edge technology. Through concrete illustrations, we hope to give readers a better understanding of composites' advantages and possibilities. What's more, composites have a role to play in the changes affecting our society. For instance, they can resolve some issues linked to climate imbalance (use of composites to build protective barriers against flooding and to strengthen buildings threatened by seismic activity),' explained Frédéric Reux, JEC Group's Editor-in-Chief and Media Director.
The book The Future of Infrastructure is published in English by JEC Group (200 pages) and is made up of four sections:
