Decoding the program: An inside look at the Delivery Hero Tech Academy

The Delivery Hero Tech Academy officially kicked off on September 6th with a diverse cohort of 20 students representing 12 nationalities. Over the course of the next 9.5 months, the students will learn how to code in Java and Python and even get the chance to intern in one of Delivery Hero's tech teams.

We recently sat down and asked the new cohort why they decided to join the Delivery Hero Tech Academy, what they hope to learn in the coming months, and any advice they have for others thinking about starting a career in Tech.

Read on to hear what they had to what some of the students.

Why are you excited to join the Delivery Hero Tech Academy?

This is the first page of a new chapter of my life and it already feels amazing to be a part of this wonderful, diverse team. I am honored to have this chance to learn and grow alongside my talented colleagues. I am sure that through the Delivery Hero Tech Academy, I will achieve my goals. I am very excited to be a member of this program which is pioneering diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.

What do you hope to learn by the end of the 9.5 months?

I believe that by the end of this program, we will know how to code with Java and will have acquired knowledge of different software engineering skills. For example, I'm interested to know how to work with databases, APIs, and cloud services. The planned curriculum is very impressive as it is not only about the technical skills but also the relevant soft skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, and communication. The group comes from 12 different countries, so it will also be an excellent opportunity to learn about each other's cultures, and work more creatively.

How do you think your background can help you to learn how to code in 9.5 months?

The relevant modules from my previous studies such as mathematics, statistics, and mechanics should help me to understand the coding concepts easier. In addition, I have some basic computer and programming skills and have previously worked with different technical software. Hopefully, this will enable me to comprehend the structures behind software engineering better.

This is a really great opportunity to get started in IT. Especially if you never studied computing before, it can be tough to enter into tech roles, as self-teaching requires a lot of free time, which not everyone has the privilege to have. This program makes the field accessible to everyone.

What do you hope to learn by the end of the 9.5 months?

I am hoping to acquire the skills I need to build things with Python. I would really like to become good enough that I am able to get a software development role after the program ends.

How do you think your background can help you to learn how to code in 9.5 months?

When I worked in retail, I often had to take care of any and all issues that arose which led to me having to learn a lot of things myself. I think my ability to go out and learn new things myself should help me succeed in the Delivery Hero Tech Academy.
