Ferrovial opens first sections of D4 and R7 highways in Bratislava to traffic

  • It has inaugurated more than half of the project, which is one of Europe's largest P3 ventures
  • The road will enhance traffic within the region and with neighboring countries and drive economic opportunities in the area

Ferrovial has inaugurated the first 29.7 kilometers of the D4 and R7 highways in Bratislava, Slovakia. Costing over €1 billion, this is one of Europe's largest public-private partnerships.

The opening to traffic of 25.2 km of the R7 and 4.5 km of the D4 marks the beginning of the 30-year concession for the infrastructure, which will alleviate traffic congestion in Bratislava.

The project is a new 59-kilometer highway comprising a 4-6-lane beltway south of Bratislava (D4) and a 4-lane highway (R7) from downtown Bratislava towards the south-east.

The D4R7 project will improve traffic conditions and facilitate journeys between countries in the region, which will boost the potential for economic development, job creation and the local supply chain.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2021.

Ferrovial, through subsidiary Cintra, heads the consortium, in partnership with Macquarie, Aberdeen, Dalmore and Austrian company PORR AG. Ferrovial Construction is building the project in partnership with PORR.

The D4R7 is the company's first project in Slovakia, in a field in which it has an extensive track record. This division of Ferrovial is one of the world's principal private sector developers of transportation infrastructure in terms of the number of projects and the volume of investment. It currently manages 1,500 kilometers of toll roads in 25 concessions in Canada, the US, Europe, Australia and Colombia. It is a shareholder in the 407 ETR concessionaire, in Ontario, Canada, with a 43.23% stake.
