Brazil Blanks Finland 4-0 in Opening Game of 2017 Women’s Nike International Friendlies

LAKEWOOD RANCH (December 7, 2017) - The Brazil Under-20 Women's National Team scored twice in each half to defeat the Finland U-20 Women's National Team 4-0 in the opening game of the 2017 Women's Nike International Friendlies.

Forward Kerolin scored a brace while defender Mona scored on a blast from outside and substitute striker Valeria added a late goal on a Finland give-away in the back.

The match was competitive early on with Finland getting the first opportunity in the fourth minute on a powerful shot from Onna Ketola from distance that seemed destined for the net but was pushed over the crossbar by Brazil's Kemelli, who also made a fantastic save in second half stoppage time to preserve the shutout.

Brazil had the lion's share of possession in the match (almost 70%) and in the sixth minute Kerolin scored her first goal of the day. Angelina won a tackle just outside the penalty box and the ball rolled to Kerolin who dribbled in on goal and bent her shot into the right side of the net from a tight angle.

In the 21st minute, Ketola had a good chance to equalize by was denied by another good save from Kemelli. Brazil earned a penalty kick in the 28th minute off a handball by Finland's captain Emma Santamäki. Victoria stepped up to take the penalty but her shot sailed over the crossbar.

Two minutes later Mona scored a golazo from the right side of the penalty area, curving the ball inside the far post with a left-footed strike to extend the South American's lead to 2-0. The last 15 minutes of the first half were all Brazil as Finland struggled to hold the ball.

Finland started the second half reinvigorated as the Europeans pushed to close the deficit, but Brazil once again asserted its dominance. Kerolin scored her second goal of the day in the 55th minute after rounding the goalkeeper and finishing from close range on a breakaway. Valeria then capitalized on a Finnish turnover in the 78th before chipping the goalkeeper for the final 4-0 score line.

Brazil will next take on England in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader (Dec. 9, 3:30 p.m.) while Finland faces the USA at 6:30 p.m. ET.
