New Funding Boosts Alec E. Baker Park Makeover

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (April 28, 2024) - New Brunswick's Alec E. Baker Park is slated for a significant upgrade, thanks to a $2.15 million state funding allocation. The park, located on Remsen Avenue near Ellen Street, will see upgrades such as a splash pad, fitness circuit equipment, a walking/jogging path, a dog park, a picnic area, a soccer field, a basketball court, and renovations to the existing playground.

The funding announcement came as part of a broader initiative by Gov. Phil Murphy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette, who recommended $117 million in Green Acres funding statewide. These funds aim to bolster park development and open space preservation.

The allocation for the 7.3-acre Alec E. Baker Park includes $1.4 million from Green Acres funding and an additional $750,000 from urban park funding. These recommendations now advance to the independent Garden State Preservation Trust (GSPT) for review, approval, and submission to the New Jersey Legislature for appropriation.

The proposed renovations also feature the addition of a gazebo and a dedicated space within the dog park for both big and small dogs.
