WASHINGTON, DC) - The District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) is reminding District residents and small businesses to protect their money and other financial interests by verifying that financial services providers are properly licensed and the availability of free, noncommercial educational tools to spot and avoid financial scams in observance of this year's National Consumer Protection Week: March 4-10.
National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW) is an annual week-long education campaign that promotes the importance of people understanding their consumer rights and making well-informed decisions about money. NCPW is sponsored by the Federal Trade Commission and is supported by federal, state and local governments and other organizations dedicated to consumer protection.
'There is an upsurge in financial crimes especially through digital means. Individuals and small businesses should manage their risks-related to online crime by establishing cybersecurity protocols,' said DISB Commissioner Stephen C. Taylor.
This week, the Department is encouraging District residents and small businesses to review their bank statements and credit reports to see if any unexpected transactions have occurred. You can order your annual free credit report by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com or calling 1 (877) 322-8228. If you notice any unauthorized activity, you should report it to DISB which has staff that investigates alleged fraud. In 2017, we helped District residents recover over $800,000.
