SA Parks and Recreation Opening 8 Pools for Pre-season Weekend Summer Fun

SAN ANTONIO (May 11, 2022) San Antonio Parks and Recreation announces the 2022 summer outdoor pool pre-season schedule with the opening of eight pools beginning Saturday, May 21. The pre-season pool sites have increased from four pool locations to eight pool locations across the city. "With temperatures rising and reaching triple digit heat so early in the year, we're excited to provide more swimming opportunities earlier in the season for the community to stay cool and have fun outdoors," said Homer Garcia III, Director of Parks and Recreation. The following pools will be open on weekends, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 1pm-7pm.

In addition to the outdoor pools opening, the Department is partnering with NEISD to offer community swim days on Mondays and Saturdays this summer:

NEISD Sports Park (12001 Wetmore Rd.) | Free
1-3:30pm - Mondays - June 6, 13, 20 and July 11, 18, 25
Noon - 4pm - Saturdays - June 11 and July 9, 23

The San Antonio Natatorium (1430 Cesar E. Chavez), a public indoor pool facility, continues to welcome swimmers for open swim, lap swim and fitness classes with pre-registration.

The Department continues to recruit summer Aquatics staff and is offering up to $700 hiring incentive, training and certification. The incentive is open to new and returning Aquatics staff. "While we're experiencing the industry-wide lifeguard shortages as other municipalities across the state and nation, our team is working hard to ensure the community has fun swimming and recreational opportunities this summer. We're implementing creative hiring strategies like hiring incentives and starting our lifeguards early to keep them engaged and working sooner in the pool season. We're also actively recruiting at schools and events - which we couldn't do last year," said Shanea Allen, Parks and Recreation Manager for Aquatics. "Due to these efforts, we're able to expand pre-season pool sites to offer more swimming opportunities in more neighborhoods than in previous years." Since March, five splash pads have been open to the public. The newest splash pad at MLK Park opened in early April. Splash pads will remain open through October 31, 2022.
