Dancer bill that allows active military members, families to keep out-of-state drivers’ licenses passes Assembly

TRENTON, N.J. - Assemblyman Ron Dancer's bill allowing military service members and their families to keep their out-of-state licenses while temporarily stationed in New Jersey was passed by the Assembly Thursday.

Dancer's bill (A325) would exempt active military members and their immediate family from having to transfer their drivers' licenses within 60 days of moving to New Jersey. Other states, such as Connecticut, Florida, and Delaware, already have such exemptions.

"Service members and their families with permanent change of station orders are staying in New Jersey for a short time," Dancer (R-Ocean) said. "Knowing they are not staying here for more than a few years, it makes sense to allow them to keep their drivers' licenses where they have a permanent residence. This is just one more small way to make life easier in New Jersey for those who serve our country, including their families who also serve through their support and sacrifice."

The bill now goes to Gov. Phil Murphy for signing.
