Allred Votes for Presidential Election Reform Act to Ensure Events Like January 6 Never Happen Again

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), a former voting rights attorney, today voted for the Presidential Election Reform Act (PERA). The bill reforms the Electoral Count Act by reaffirming that the vice president's role at the count is ceremonial, raising the objection threshold to one-third of each house (up from a single Member from each house) and listing the explicit Constitutional grounds upon which Members may object to a state's electoral votes.

"I was on the floor of the House on January 6, and I remember vividly how close we came to losing our democracy," said Allred."This bill is an important step to ensure that we strengthen our democracy, and the presidential certification process, to ensure that we never come that close to losing it again."

This bill ensures that Congress receives a single accurate electoral certificate from each state, requires that states select electors in accordance with state law existing as of the date of the election, and provides a federal judicial remedy in the event that a governor refuses to certify the lawful result of a presidential election.
