Masters students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) following both the MA Musical Theatre course and the Welsh medium MA Perfformio (Performance) programme are staging two very different shows in Cardiff this week.
Students on the MA Performio course are getting ready to present the Welsh language piece Llanast on Wednesday, April 3rd and Friday, April 5th at the Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff while those studying the Musical Theatre course are currently rehearsing The World Goes Round which can be seen on Thursday, April 4th and Saturday, April 6th at same venue.
Originally devised in French by Yasmina Reza, Llanast has been adapted into the Welsh language by acclaimed dramatist, Gareth Miles.
Regarded as one of Yasmina Reza's greatest plays, Llanast depicts how the child within is always lurking inside us, waiting to break free and cause chaos. During the play, we meet two sets of parents - where one child has hurt the other at a public park. They agree to meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner however, as the evening progresses, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in an evening of utter chaos.
Directed by Elen Bowman, the cast includes students Lowri Morgan; Nia James; Gethin Bickerton; Eilir Gwyn and Gruffydd Wyn Owain Jones - all of whom as studying this highly practical and intensive one year postgraduate programme that offers training to develop young artists. The programme focuses on acting, singing and dancing as well as providing students with opportunities to develop directing skills.
The second group of students - those studying the MA Musical Theatre - are working with director, Angharad Lee to stage And The World Goes 'Round, a musical revue that showcases the songs of John Kander and Fred Ebb.
Best known for musicals such as Cabaret, Chicago and The Rink, this piece by one of the most prolific writing partnerships in American Musical History celebrates the genius of Kander and Ebb, reacquainting us with signature songs such as New York New York and All That Jazz, whilst reminding us of the sophistication of their writing with numbers such as Coloured Lights and I Don't Remember You. This intimate evening is perfect for musical theatre lovers.
'Kander and Ebb are Broadway Royalty,' says Angharad Lee. 'A four decade long song writing team that produced such staged hits as Cabaret and Chicago and who made a star out of Liza Minelli. A pairing who were happy to explore the darker side of relationships, and whose songs are examples of some of the most wonderful lyrical song writing out there.
'It has been a beautiful challenge for these talented MA Musical Theatre students, getting to grips with the wonderful imagery these songs evoke. A Musical Revue means as a performer you have nowhere to hide. It's just the song, and you, and your treatment of that song is the star. We have staged the whole piece as an intimate cabaret style production, enabling the performers to get up and personal with the audience and make each song their own. It will make you smile and cry and will be a reminder of what outstanding artists Kander and Ebb truly were and are.'
The Musical Theatre programme is a rigorous postgraduate programme that offers practical training to equip participants in the 'triple-threat' disciplines of acting, singing, dancing. All teaching staff are theatre professionals that work in the industry as well as lecturing in higher education.
Both courses are provided by UWTSD in Cardiff and are form part of a selection of postgraduate degrees that provide students with a solid technique as well as a broad understanding of the creative industries in Wales and further afield.
UWTSD Cardiff offers a lively creative melting pot of actors, singers and dancers of the future. The courses' work ethic is based on personal development, respect and collaboration and this stems from the support the students receive from the committed and professional staff.
