Thompson Announces Appointment of Mayra Briggs to the U.S. Naval Academy

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson today announced that Ms. Mayra Briggs, of Port Matilda, Pa. has accepted a fully-qualified appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.

Briggs is a senior at State College Area High School. She is the daughter of Kevin Briggs, of Port Matilda, Pa., and Tonya and Bob Cornwall of Port Matilda, Pa. She is the granddaughter of Bill and Teresa Allemang of Punxsutawney, Pa., and Tom and Margie Briggs of Lancaster, Pa.

"Mayra is a great example of a well-rounded student and active community member. From her participation in the Spanish Club and Speech and Debate Club to her volunteer work with Dancing Against Hunger and Mini-Thon, she clearly has what it takes to succeed at the United States Naval Academy," Rep. Thompson said. "I know that her hard work as a student will serve her well as she starts her military career. I wish her the best of luck as a midshipman in Annapolis."

Briggs is an active member of the State College High School Girls Tennis Team, Spanish Club President, Director of Recruitment for the Speech and Debate Club, and Dancing Against Hunger. She is a certified lifeguard and pool manager for the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Department.
