Inflation increased to 7.2% in April 2022 (HICP: 7.1%)

Vienna,2022-05-18 - In April 2022, the inflation ratewas at 7.2%, as Statistics Austria reports. Expenditures for transport (+17.7% compared to April 2021, including fuels +49.1%) proved to be the most important price driver, followed by expenditures for housing, water and energy (+9.4%, heating oil +100.4%, gas +68.7%, electricity +8.5%). The consumer price index (CPI 2020)was at 109.1, while the average price level increased by 0.3% compared to March 2022.

"In April 2022, consumer prices again increased significantly compared to the previous year with +7.2%. The last time we saw such a high inflation rate in Austria was in October 1981. At that time, oil prices had risen sharply as a result of the first Gulf War. Currently, in addition to fuel and energy products, rising food prices are also determining the increase in inflation," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

The index level of the harmonised index of consumer prices(HICP 2015)was 118.75 in April 2022 (March 2022: revised 118.00) with a harmonised inflation rate at 7.1% (March 2022: revised 6.6%)
