Larson Statement in Support of Protests

Hartford, CT - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement in support of the protests in response to the murder of George Floyd.

'I stand in support with thousands of peaceful protestors across Connecticut and the country. Our country is hurting right now. The murder of George Floyd is the latest in a long list spanning centuries of deeply disturbing crimes targeting our fellow Americans. We must work together to end the systemic racism that exists in this country, or these tragedies will continue. I have been proud to serve with civil rights leader Representative John Lewis. He has dedicated his life to fighting for racial equity and I echo his call for continuing constructive, peaceful demonstration. While this won't end 400+ years of atrocities overnight, we must take steps that start now to fulfill a vision of justice and equality for all Americans.

'Despite the progress that our country has made, Black Americans are still disproportionately affected by police brutality. I strongly support a proposal, embraced by many of my colleagues, to establish a commission to study the implications of slavery and segregation that still impact African Americans today, and examine appropriate remedies to address those disparities. This week, I will also cosponsor a resolution led by Rep. Ayanna Pressley condemning police brutality and calling for a meaningful policing reform that will ensure greater accountability and keep our communities safe. In the coming days, I will be holding community conversations with groups like the Voices of Women of Color on how to address racism in this country. Now is the time to listen to impacted Black Americans and people of color, follow their lead, and take action to change and fulfill the vision of the civil rights movement.'
