Relatives of the Grenfell Tower victims put forward plans last month to turn the empty building into a 'vertical forest' overtaken by nature. The government, however, is consulting engineers about whether the tower can be demolished. A decision is due to be made this summer.
When asked if the tower should be demolished or maintained, 51% of Londoners think the block should be pulled down as soon as possible, with another 16% saying it should be demolished but at a later date. Only 9% of Londoners think the tower should not be pulled down at all.
Along political lines while a majority of both major political voting blocs say the tower should come down as soon as possible, Conservative voters (64%) are more likely than Labour voters (50%) to think so. Labour voters are more likely than Conservatives (13% versus 7%) to think the tower should be kept.
While some 38% of young Londoners (those aged between 18 and 24) think the tower should be quickly demolished, many are unsure (30%) what should happen to the tower, and a further 11% want it to remain.
Among older Londoners however, around six in ten think quick demolition is the best solution, including 61% of the 50-64-year olds and 63% of those aged 65 and over.
