Sinn Féin spokesperson on the Irish language Peadar Tóibín TD has said that the Irish Government have abdicated their responsibility for upholding Irish language rights in the North.

A strongly worded report published by the Council of Europe has castigated the lack of provision of language rights and states that the Irish language act is being prevented by 'sectarian politics'.

The British Government too have received criticism for their lack of action in this regard. However, the Irish government has failed to ensure the delivery of the Act.

An Teachta Tóibín said:

'It's time for the Irish Government to stand up for the St Andrew's Agreement of which they are co-signatories. This Agreement guaranteed the delivery of an Irish Language Act. The Irish Government is a guarantor and co-signatory of this agreement. The Irish Government have done virtually nothing to ensure that this Agreement, bound in law, was honoured.

'The British Government have been roundly criticised for their neglect of the Irish language and securing Irish language rights. Indeed, a High Court ruling brought by Conradh na Gaeilge last week found that the Stormont Executive had failed in its legal duty to adopt an Irish Language strategy.

'There is an onus on all parties involved to allow the Act as agreed to come into being. Similarly, the Irish and British Governments have a role to play to ensure that statutes of this importance are honoured. Considering that this pledge has been in existence for ten years, it is shameful that the Irish Language Act continues to be blocked, with no meaningful intervention by the Irish Government on the matter.'

Dualgas ag an rialtas ó dheas cearta teanga ó thuaigh a chosaint - Tóibín

Dúirt urlabhraí Gaeilge Shinn Féin, an Teachta Peadar Tóibín, go bhfuil rialtas an Stáit seo ag éalú óna gcúraimí maidir le cearta teanga sa Tuaisceart a chosaint.

Cháin Comhairle na hEorpa an easpa soláthair cearta teanga i dtuairisc a foilsíodh le déanaí. Deir an tuairisc go bhfuil bac ar chur i bhfeidhm Acht na dTeangacha de bharr 'polaitíocht sheicteach'.

Cé go bhfuil rialtas na Breataine go mór á cháineadh sa tuairisc mar thoradh ar a easpa gníomhartha, tá teip ar rialtas na hÉireann fosta.

Dúirt an Teachta Tóibín:

'Mar shínitheoir ar Chomhaontú Chill Rimhinn, tá sé in am do rialtas na hÉireann é a chosaint. Thug an tAcht seo reachtaíocht oifigiúil Acht na dTeangacha a chur i gcríoch. Is ráthóir agus comhshínitheoir Rialtas na hÉireann ar an Aontú seo. Níl rud ar bith déanta ag an rialtas le cinntiú go mbeadh an tAontú seo curtha i bhfeidhm de réir dlí.

'Cáineadh rialtas na Breataine go láidir mar thoradh ar an neamairt atá déanta acu ar an nGaeilge agus ar chearta teanga Gaeilgeoirí. Rialaigh an Ard-Chúirt o mBéal Feirste an tseachtain seo caite gur theip ar Fheidhmeannas Stormont a chuid dualgas reachtúil a chomhlíonadh agus Straitéis Gaeilge a bhaint amach.

'Tá sé de dhualgas ar gach páirtí ó thuaidh an tAcht a chur i bhfeidhm. Mar aon le sin, tá ról ag rialtais na hÉireann agus an Bhreatain a chinntiú go gcomhlíonfar na reachtanna olltábhachtacha seo. Tá an gealltanas seo ag seasamh le deich mbliana anuas gan bogadh. Is truamhéalach é nach bhfuil rialtas na hÉireann sásta a ladar a chur sa scéal.'
